Prosjektbeskrivelse

What can society, firms and workers gain from reorganization and reallocation? What types of reorganization are successful? Who, if any, lose when firms reorganize? And how can institutions and unions influence the distribution of winners and losers? This project will produce new knowledge on how downsizing, mergers and splits, and internal reorganization affect establishment performance and worker well-being. We will examine how labor market policies and workplace structures for negotiation and cooperation between management and worker organizations affect outcomes of the reorganization process for workers and firms. To make our conclusions and recommendations comprehensive, we will interpret establishment performance and worker-well being in a broad fashion--measuring outcomes both in terms of establishment productivity and survival, and worker sickness absence, subjective measures of well being, as well as employment and income. Focus will be kept on strategies that ensure inclusion and reduce marginalization and exclusion of workers. Comparative analyses between Norway and Great Britain allow us to contrast different models of labor market policy. The project is interdisciplinary, drawing on a wide range of data and methodological strategies. This is a joint project with the Institute for Social Research (ISF).
