Project description

The overall aim of the project is to study redistribution as a means to achieve economic growth and development in poor countries faced with increasing international competition. We will give special attention to the manifestations of social conflicts, such as riots, revolts, violence, and crime. We want to study the effects of globalisation (trade liberalisation and free capital mobility) in societies with a high degree of unequality in income, entitlements, ownership, and influence. The aim is to develop new theoretical approaches in combination with comparative empirical investigations. The geographical focus will be on Southern African countries in relation to the experiences of East Asia and Latin America. The project in anchored in economics, but aims at incorporating approaches that are stronger in other disciplines such as politcal science.
