Project description

A key assumption in this programme is that the Norwegian welfare state is based on a set of mechanisms allowing generous welfare arrangements while keeping expenditures in check and generating sufficient political support. The projects strive to address factors that either tend to upset or tend to keep up the welfare state balance. One central theme is the interaction between welfare arrangements and the wage distribution, studied theoretically and empirically, by international comparisons. The second key theme concerns institutional arrangements and agents' behaviour, both of potential recipients and of those implementing policy. One project addresses the interaction between physicians and patients, another project the integration of immigrants both in the short and the long run. Both of these projects draw on the extensive register data established at the Frisch Centre. The project on physicians and patients will also link in new data sets on physicians and utilise in-depth interview data. This project involves expertise of economists, medical personnel and anthropologists. The programme is conducted in cooperation between the Frisch Centre and ISF.
