Project description

The project aims at combining perspectives from both economics and sociology in the interpretation of the mechanisms leaving people in the risk of marginalisation and/or (social) exclusion. Our focus is on educational drop out and non-employment among teen-agers and young adults. Marginalisation is considered as a process in which the attachment of individuals to education and jobs deteriorate over time. First, in our description of marginalisation and exclusion, we distinguish between teen-agers who have left compulsory school (16-19) and young adults (20-24). Second, we study what kind of individual and family background characteristics which are associated with high risks of marginalisation. Our ambition extends beyond descriptive correlations as we aim at identifying causal mechanisms. Finally, we want to study whether youth unemployment and marginal attachment to the labour market during adolescence and early adulthood have any long-term effects on the socio-economic success of individuals.Focus is on comprehensive multigenerational Norwegian panel data, but we will also make comparative studies including data from the United States.
